Bon Bini – Welcome to Curaçao

The most important reason to travel to Curaçao 🙂 Perfect weather – crystal clear turquoise water

Overview

Curaçao is part of the Netherlands Antilles, belongs to the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) and is approx. 60 km from Venezuela. As an autonomous country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, there are many western influences – but there is a Caribbean attitude towards life. Curaçao is also known as the pearl of the Caribbean and is a dream destination for tourists and divers – if you want to be away from mass tourism, this is the place for you.

The island offers dream beaches and a very lively underwater life, a paradise for divers. Nature lovers can go on a voyage of discovery in the 444 square kilometer interior or visit the historic Landhuizen. You shouldn’t miss out on the island’s capital, Willemstad, where you can shop, enjoy the historic waterfront or go out to eat well. Culture is on offer here – just a walk through the old town is a highlight.

The islanders are very friendly and relaxed and very helpful. Papiamentu (a mixed language), Dutch or English is spoken.

The currency of Curaçao is the Antillean guilder (also called florin), which is abbreviated as Nafl. US dollars are also widely accepted. You can pay with the usual credit cards, which should be the best of the fees for most tourists (there are fees for withdrawing cash, ATMs are everywhere). The Antillean guilder can hardly be exchanged in Europe or the USA, it is best to bring a few US dollars with you and spend the Antillean guilders at the end of the trip 🙂 – or even better: you just come back.

Curacao is addicting!

Climate and the best travel time

climate

Curaçao is not far from the equator and has a subtropical climate all year round. The moderate trade wind that usually prevails is very pleasant.

It is hottest in August and September, temperatures rise to 30-35 ° C, the water is up to 30 ° C and is still very pleasantly warm even at greater depths (divers).

In October to January the so-called rainy season starts (usually only short, refreshing showers) with slightly lower temperatures, a very good travel time. The island is very green and there are the most beautiful sunsets all year round.

February to July then gets drier, the temperatures are pleasant, there are few mosquitoes (not a really big problem at other times of travel either).

Tips

When visiting Curaçao you have to fill out an electronic entry visa before you travel, so the process at the airport is quick and easy. Even in the current corona situation, traveling to Curaçao is very easy. See the article below (Travel and Corona).

On the island it is best to rent a car to explore the island (there are providers at the airport, or we are happy to help with cheap rental cars – in the range of 30 euros for a smaller car you are there). As everywhere, the following applies: Don’t leave anything in the car, it is even recommended not to lock the car on the more secluded beaches.

Diving is organized very easily: 1. Fetching bottles (extremely cheap in comparison – usually well under 10 euros per bottle), 2. to a beach (diving is allowed almost everywhere – there is a small entry fee from time to time), 3. diving – the reef is nowhere far away and just a dream. Tip: Since there are diving schools on many beaches and it is usually cheap, it is hardly worthwhile to drive around bottles in the car. Another tip: In addition to the many beach diving spots, you can also take the ship to some great spots a little further away.

Klein Curaçao, a small island, is also a popular day trip destination – also very popular with divers.

The most beautiful beaches are on the western part of the island, often you are almost alone on a dream beach. The beaches are mostly on the southern side. On the northern side, the sea is rougher and more secluded.
